Four finals, one broken rigger and a club record

The club has never put four crews into four finals on the same afternoon, and until Saturday nobody seriously thought it would. It happened anyway, in a headwind that made the morning heats miserable and the afternoon ones merely unpleasant.

The record went to the senior four, who took eleven seconds off a time that had stood for fifteen years and then spent an hour insisting the course must have been short. It was not. Two other clubs measured it for them.

Results

  • Senior four — first, and a new club record
  • Junior eight — second, by a length and a half
  • Novice pair — third, in their first competitive outing
  • Masters four — fourth, and cheerfully unrepentant about it

The rigger broke on the trailer before racing began, which is the best possible time for a rigger to break. A neighbouring club lent us a spare and refused to take anything for it, so their bar bill was quietly settled on our tab.

Next outing is the regional head in six weeks. Entries close a fortnight before, and the crew lists go up in the loft as they are decided.
